The different types of container

Containers are worldwide standardized boxes/units which enable easier handling as well as smoother transportation of goods. Most common ISO containers are 8 ft. wide (2.44m) and either 20 ft. (6.096 m.) or 40 ft. (12.19 m.) long ‒ hence the abbreviations TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) or FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit).

Solas/Containerweights

New rules for Verified Gross Mass (VGM) SOLAS

Since 01.07.2016 every export container must be verified weighted before shipment. This is mandatory according to the security agreement of SOLAS. (Safety of life at sea - UN Convention on ship safety) If at the time of “VGM cut off” the VGM has not been provided, a container must not be loaded. What do you need to do since July 1st 2016?

The VGM details need to be provided to us sufficiently in advance of vessel loading. The responsibility for obtaining and providing the verified gross mass lies with the shipper.

How to determine the VGM?

The SOLAS regulations prescribes two methods by which you as the shipper may obtain the verified gross mass of a packed container.

  • As shipper you weigh the packed and sealed container using calibrated and certified equipment.
  • As shipper you add the weight of each package stuffed in the container, add the packing and securing material and add the tare weight of the utilized container. The method itself needs to be certified and approved by a national regulatory body.

An estimated weight is not permitted. The weight so obtained shall be submitted to us in writing signed by an authorized person. An electronic submission of the document is also possible. In any case it must be clear stated in the document that it is the VGM - Verified Gross Mass.
